Body Mass Index (BMI) is a height/weight formula used by doctors to assess a person’s body weight. Your body mass index rating tells you if you are underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese.

For most people, BMI is quick and convenient weight assessment method and a fairly accurate predictor of weight-related health risks. BUT… it fails to accurately measure body fat percentage.

This is significant because excess body fat is the main cause of weight-related diseases. So certain people (e.g. athletes) with a high muscle-fat ratio may have a high BMI rating yet be in excellent health.
