Good carbohydrates are less refined. Often called ‘complex carbs’, they include foods like: whole wheat bread, pasta, rice, oats, wholegrain cereals. The healthiest varieties include brown rice, wholewheat pasta and other wholegrains.
These good carbs have very little in common with the heavily refined, sugary carbs like sweets, cookies, cakes, syrups, bleached white bread or candied breakfast cereal.
A healthy weight loss diet should include regular helpings of good carbs and only small amounts of refined carbs.
The Glycemic Index (GI) is the latest way of classifying carb-rich foods according to how fast they raise blood-glucose levels. Low or intermediate glycemic index foods offer better blood-sugar and insulin control than high-GI foods.
